The Stringy Photon Sphere
Abstract
The S matrix on an asymptotically-flat Schwarzschild black hole is studied as a function of position on ℐ. We derive the lightcone singularities that arise in the S matrix whenever the two points on ℐ are connected by a bulk null geodesic. This includes geodesics orbiting near the photon sphere for a long time, whose kinematics determine the associated lightcone singularities. By turning on a finite string length ℓs, worldsheet corrections are shown to shift the lightcone singularities into the complex time plane, resolving the singularities at real times. In particular, we derive the leading stringy resolution of the photon sphere singularities. We also compute stringy corrections to the eikonal quasinormal mode spectrum of Schwarzschild, and discuss the kinematics of strings orbiting the photon sphere.
