SuperCrude EoS: A Simple, Analytical, and Reasonably Accurate Equation of State for Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics

Abstract

We present SuperCrude, a vastly simplified astrophysical equation of state that captures the most important physics needed for explosive astrophysics, but using compact, physically-motivated analytical approximations rather than precise interpolated data tables. We present a number of code tests demonstrating the performance of SuperCrude in a wide range of parameter space. In large regions of parameter space, SuperCrude is precisely accurate to within the accuracy level of helmeos. For some regions (especially where degeneracy, gas, and radiation are comparable) SuperCrude has errors in its effective adiabatic index on the order of a few percent. The solver's estimate of the temperature is less accurate, on the order of tens of percent. Because the solver is analytic, SuperCrude is designed in such a way to guarantee exact thermodynamic consistency. We incorporate SuperCrude into some hydrodynamic and astrophysical test problems, including the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf star. When coupled with a stiff nuclear network, SuperCrude does not achieve the same nucleosynthetic yields as helmeos, motivating future work to improve the temperature accuracy further.
