Optimal Synthesis on the Special Linear Group
Abstract
We study the exponential map on the group of real two-by-two matrices with determinant one, endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric. Using the Euler-Poincaré equation and its linearization, we determine the conjugate and Maxwell times and identify a domain on which the exponential map is a global diffeomorphism onto the complement of the Maxwell stratum. This provides an alternative proof that the first Maxwell time coincides with the cut time. We obtain an explicit matrix description of the cut locus and characterize the globally minimizing geodesics. Furthermore, we analyze the first Maxwell-time function, determine its unique global minimum, and show that the injectivity radius is π√(14)/4. Finally, we characterize the intersection of the cut and conjugate loci and prove that every geodesic is equi-optimal.
