Abstract

Single-atom doping at the cluster core is an effective strategy for modulating the molecule-like properties of monolayer-protected nanoclusters. In this study, we systematically synthesized a pair of alkyne-protected silver nanoclusters, in which the central template anion of one nanocluster was replaced by a copper atom in the other. Incorporation of copper significantly quenched the photoluminescence of the nanocluster while enhancing its electron-transfer capability through modification of the electronic structure. Theoretical calculations further revealed that the central copper atom contributes directly to the frontier molecular orbitals. This work represents an important step toward the development of atomically precise nanochemistry, demonstrating how precise structural tailoring of alkyne-protected silver nanoclusters can be used to regulate their functional properties.
