Abstract
Introduction: One important brain region involved in spatial function and episodic memory is the hippocampus. Although energy drinks negatively affect several organs, they are ingested to make up for sleep deprivation. A naturally occurring polyphenol, naringin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.Material and Methods: Twenty adult male albino rats, their weight 210-250 gm were distributed in an equal manner into; Group I: given 1ml normal saline, Group II: received 100mg/kg B.w of naringin, Group III: given 3.1ml/kg B.W of Red Bull, Group IV: 100mg/kg B.w of naringin + 3.1ml/kg B.W of Red Bull by intra-gastric intubation. When the experiment is finished, rats were subjected to behavioral tests then sacrificed. Hippocampi were dissected then processed for histological and biochemical studies. Results: Red Bull caused impaired behavioral tests of rats, disturbed oxidative enzymes and histological alternation. Co-administration of Naringin and Red Bull restore most of altered changes. Conclusion: Naringin supplementation with Red Bull nearly completely restored the hippocampal structure and functions to their pre-damaged state.
