Mean-Field Backreaction in Single-Field Inflation

Abstract

The validity of linear perturbation theory and the role of backreaction in single-field inflationary models that enhance power at small scales have recently been under debate. We investigate scalar backreaction semi-analytically in a mean-field approach within the decoupling limit, considering popular models with a transient ultra-slow-roll (USR) stage or an oscillatory feature (OF) in the potential. We find that ultraviolet (UV) modes in the Bunch--Davies vacuum can substantially affect backreaction estimates unless removed by adiabatic subtraction. Our mean-field treatment can reproduce recent lattice results, but reveals a spurious sensitivity to UV contributions in some cases. This sensitivity is reduced in the OF model when copious particle production separates the amplified physical modes from the UV vacuum tail, making lattice results more reliable in this regime. In USR, instead, adiabatically subtracted spectra yield milder backreaction on the background evolution than previously inferred.
