Multilayer perovskite air-electrode architectures for enhanced performance in intermediate-temperature solid oxide cells

Abstract

In this work, we show that perovskite-based air electrodes for intermediate-temperature solid oxide cells based on SrFeO3-delta and SrCoO3-delta in a multilayer architecture exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance and stability in comparison to single-phase or composite analogues. X-ray pure phases of SrFe0.9Mo0.1O3-delta, SrFe0.9Sb0.1O3-delta and SrCo0.95Mo0.05O3-delta were obtained by Pechini synthesis and deposited on Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-delta electrolyte membranes by slurry coating. Scanning electron microscopy revealed comparable thicknesses, good adherence to the electrolyte and homogeneous grain size of various configurations involving single-phase electrodes, two electrode layers of different composition and a composite SrFe0.9Mo0.1O3-delta- SrCo0.95Mo0.05O3-delta electrode. The configuration SrCo0.95Mo0.05O3-delta/SrFe0.9Mo0.1O3-delta/Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-delta shows a lower ASR of 0.15 S2 cm2 at 700 degrees C compared to the best-performing, single-phase electrode studied, SrCo0.95Mo0.05O3-delta (0.21 S2 cm2 at 700 degrees C). However, all other tested multi-phase configurations, including the composite, show polarisation-resistance values, with and without dc bias, similar to or slightly higher than that of the single-phase cobaltite. Thermal cycling indicates that SrFe0.9Mo0.1O3-delta in contact with the electrolyte notably benefits stability, most likely due to a better thermal and chemical match. The multilayer electrode SrCo0.95Mo0.05O3-delta/SrFe0.9Mo0.1O3-delta is promising for intermediate-temperature applications due to its superior electrochemical performance and stability in comparison to single-phase perovskite cobaltite.
