The multiple origins of spurs in stellar streams: a challenge for dark matter diagnostics

Abstract

Spurs along stellar streams are often interpreted as signatures of interactions with dark matter subhalos, and thus have been proposed as diagnostics on the clustering and nature of dark matter. Although galactic baryonic components could play similar roles as gravitational perturbers of streams, the possible signatures they leave and the degeneracy with subhalos have been overlooked. In this paper, we analyse simulations of streams experiencing disruptions by dark matter subhalos, a galactic bar, and a galaxy merger. Although spurs are more frequently found to be induced by the galaxy merger, the spurs originating from all these processes are morphologically similar. Therefore, such morphological features should not be used alone to characterise the mechanism of their origin, nor to constrain the nature of dark matter.
