Dysfunctional Functionals and their Therapies in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Abstract

The exchange-correlation functional in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) is known to have dependence on past densities and initial states, and yet this memory-dependence is ignored in practical calculations which almost always use an adiabatic approximation. We discuss the dysfunction that arises due to this deficiency and point to therapies that go beyond the adiabatic approximation. Still, adiabatic TDDFT has had success in a wide range of systems for response properties and for fully non-equilibrium dynamics, and why this is so is only partially understood. This, together with the rigorous foundation of the exact theory and its favorable system-size scaling, provides tremendous impetus for continuing to strive towards improved approximations to the exact functionals, and a deeper understanding of the impact of approximations in applications.
