Damage characterisation of sand particle erosion on carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composites: Geometric and microscopic damage

Abstract

Solid particle erosion can severely damage aeronautical components such as rotor blades, wing leading edges, and fan blades. These structures are widely manufactured from carbon fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) because of their high specific stiffness and excellent mechanical performance. This study investigates the influence of impact angle and exposure time on the macroscopic and microscopic erosion-induced damage of a carbon/epoxy CFRP laminate through a combined surface characterization. The results confirm the brittle response of the investigated CFRP under solid particle erosion, with the highest erosion rates occurring at normal and near-normal impact angles. Microscopic observations reveal distinct damage mechanisms depending on the impact angle, while prolonged exposure affects damage progression and surface morphology. Overall, this work provides experimental insights into the evolution of erosion-induced damage in the investigated CFRP laminate under severe solid particle erosion conditions.
