Abstract
The rapid expansion of the renewable energy industry renders thermal energy storage technology a critical support for high-efficiency energy utilization. As an organic phase change material (PCMs), 1-octadecanol (OD) is plagued by intrinsic limitations of low thermal conductivity and sluggish heat absorption release kinetics, restricting its practical deployment under high-power thermal energy storage operating conditions. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene (GR) and three-dimensional carbon foam (CF) were utilized to modify OD for fabricating a series of composite phase change thermal storage materials (CPCMs). A suite of characterizations including FTIR, SEM, DSC, and Hot Disk measurements were employed to systematically probe the phase composition, microstructure, phase change temperature, phase change enthalpy, stability, and thermal conductivity of CPCMs. Modification effects exerted by carbon-based fillers with varied structures on OD differ remarkably. Three-dimensional network structured CF can effectively build continuous thermal conduction pathways, while GR sheets contribute to optimized interfacial heat transfer performance. In contrast, CNTs are prone to agglomeration and intertwining, which undermines their thermal conductivity enhancement effect. Nevertheless, all CPCMs retain favorable thermal storage capability and superior cycling stability. This work provides meaningful guidance for the rational selection of carbon-based fillers and performance optimization of low-temperature organic PCMs.
