Continuous in-situ synchrotron micro-XCT observation of thermoplastic composite laminate consolidation

Abstract

The present work deals with the in-situ simultaneous microscopic and macroscopic observation of thermoplastic composites laminate consolidation under hot press conditions. With this aim, first the inCO2TO setup was developed. Then, microscopic observations of porosities evolution by fast micro-XCT were carried out at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Finally, a 3D image processing methodology enabled to draw several important conclusions. They show that a decompaction phenomenon occurs when the temperature reaches the melting onset point, mainly at ply interfaces by a substantial increase of voids. Pressure has been demonstrated effective to limit this phenomenon and consequently reduce the presence of voids. Different void reduction mechanisms were identified by statistical and morphological analysis within plies and at the interfaces depending on consolidation pressure. A main outcome is the difficulty to eliminate interlaminar voids at low pressure whereas medium-sized intralaminar voids are significantly reduced.
