Demographic studies of cigarette beetle on commercial tobacco varieties using age-stage two-sex life tables
Abstract
The cigarette beetle ( Lasioderma serricorne ) is a widely distributed pest of stored products, causing significant economic losses worldwide. Pakistan’s tobacco business suffers economically from L. serricorne , and this insect can seriously deteriorate tobacco that has been stored. The most destructive of these are the larval and adult stages. This study aims to develop a life table L. serricorne on six tobacco varieties SPT-G-28, K-339, SPT-G-227, OK-940, Gulshery and RG-17. Results show significant variations in survival rate, population growth parameters and developmental periods of cigarette beetle across different tobacco varieties. RG-17 variety supported longest developmental period and highest reproductive metrics, indicating its susceptibility to infestation. Conversely, Gulshery variety showed higher intrinsic rates of increase and fecundity. According to results, this information may provide valuable insights into the L. serricorne infestation in warehouses settings and contribute to the development of effective for mass rearing and management strategies.
