No cosmic horizons from a strengthened higher-dimensional strong energy condition
Abstract
Time-dependent supergravity compactifications lie beyond the setting of the Gibbons/Maldacena-Nuñez no-de Sitter theorem and can even support eternal cosmic acceleration, raising the question of whether they can also produce future cosmic horizons. For general higher-dimensional matter, the strong energy condition alone does not exclude such horizons. Here, we demonstrate that a theory fulfilling a strengthened version of the strong energy condition cannot be compactified down to a lower-dimensional theory able to support a future cosmic horizon. For 10d and 11d supergravities reduced to at least four large spacetime dimensions, this energy condition is fulfilled by the sources that already fulfill the strong energy condition in the higher-dimensional theory. Our assumption on the dimensional reduction is that it is performed on a smooth compact and boundaryless space.
