Spectral theory for transmission problems and resonances for transparent balls

Abstract

We construct generalized eigenfunctions and a spectral calculus for the transmission problem on Lipschitz domains. Then, focusing on the specific example of the ball, we prove a high-frequency resonance dichotomy for Maxwell's equations for a ball with positive, piecewise constant permittivity and permeability. If the product of these coefficients is no larger inside the ball than outside, the cutoff resolvent extends holomorphically to a strip of fixed width below the real axis, including the case of equal products. If the interior product is larger, we construct whispering-gallery resonances exponentially close to the real axis. The proofs use estimates for the transverse electric and transverse magnetic determinants that are uniform in angular momentum and complex frequency, together with a quasimode construction and Rouché's theorem. Explicit generalized eigenfunctions identify these determinants with the scattering poles and give the spectral resolution and the normalization relating the scattering amplitude to the Mie T-matrix.
