Determining the exposure of forest production zones to climate change in France?

Abstract

The latest observations of diebacks and the analysis of their causes tend to confirm the vulnerability of some of the main French forest species to climate change. Aware of these stakes, managers are pondering about stand management and renewal. The multi-organisation network ESPERENSE is being set up to search for answers to these questions via a network of trials aimed at comparing species and provenances. In order to rationalise the experimental effort, a methodology has been developed to prioritise the zones of mainland France where alternatives to current local species have to be investigated. The approach consists in selecting zones strongly involved in timber production that are already of concern or will be of concern in the future because of climate change, based on 3 modelling approaches. The risk is evaluated by combining stakes and exposure. The zoning approach is detailed. The resulting maps are made available for the main species found in France.
