Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most significant staple crops consumed by the majority of people, while salinity is a main obstacle to its cultivation. Selection of salt-tolerant rice genotypes based on phenotypic, physiological, and yield traits is crucial for progress in rice breeding programmes. Morphological, physiological, and yield attributes of twenty-eight rice genotypes were evaluated under saline soil conditions over two growing seasons, 2024 and 2025, at the Experimental Farm of El-Sirw Agricultural Research Station in Damietta governorate, Egypt. Path analysis indicated that panicle weight, total biomass, number of panicles per plant, and catalase activity exhibited substantial direct and indirect effects and strong associations with grain yield, highlighting their potential importance in improving grain productivity under saline conditions. These results demonstrated considerable variation in the performance of the evaluated genotypes. Among the tested materials, IHL 237, IHL 260, IHL 224, IHL 255, and IHL 235, along with the parental cultivar Giza 179, exhibited superior performance under salinity stress. Their favorable performance under saline soil conditions highlights their potential as promising genetic materials for use in rice breeding programs. These genotypes could serve as valuable sources of salinity tolerance and may be incorporated into breeding strategies aimed at developing high-yielding rice cultivars adapted to salt-affected environments.
