Granulomatous lobular mastitis involving accessory breast tissue: a case report and review of the literature

  1. 1Department of General Surgery, Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Abstract

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the breast. Although its incidence has increased in recent years, GLM involving accessory breast tissue has rarely been reported. This study describes the complete clinical course of a patient with GLM involving accessory breast tissue, including disease onset, diagnosis, and treatment. The patient presented with persistent swelling, pain, and ulceration of a left axillary mass. Multiple courses of antibiotic therapy failed to produce significant clinical improvement. Based on the clinical manifestations, GLM involving accessory breast tissue was considered the most likely diagnosis. Histopathological examination following surgical treatment ultimately confirmed the diagnosis of GLM. This review aims to consolidate the available evidence regarding the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of GLM involving accessory breast tissue and provide a reference for its diagnosis and management.
