Abstract

Background:: This study analyzed articles on cryotherapy in endodontics to examine the characteristics and evolution of research output in this field.

Methods:: The search was conducted in November 2024 on Web of Science and Scopus. Citation counts were collected from Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. The following parameters were analyzed: citation average, citation density, citation power (an exploratory, study-specific metric based on citations received from Journal Citation Reports, Q1–Q2 journals), year of publication, journal, study design, theme, country, continent, number of authors, and keywords.

Results:: The search resulted in 4409 records, of which 34 were included. The journal with the most included articles was the Journal of Endodontics (20.6%). Randomized clinical trials were the most common study design (52.9%). The predominant theme was postoperative pain (44.1%). The most frequent keywords were “cryotherapy,” followed by “postoperative pain.” The country with the most studies was India and Asia was the most represented continent. There was a strong negative correlation between publication year and citation average (r = −0.924, P < .001) and citation density (r = −0.817, P < .001). In univariable analyses, publication year was significantly associated with both citation average and citation density (P < .001). In the multivariable models, publication year remained significantly associated with citation average and citation density (P < .001), while the postoperative pain theme was positively associated with both citation average (P = .021) and citation density (P = .006).

Conclusions:: Among the included studies, randomized clinical trials were the predominant study design, postoperative pain was the most frequently investigated theme, and Asia was the most represented region. These findings reflect research trends within the included literature and should be interpreted cautiously given the limited number of included studies. Further research across diverse populations and geographic regions may help address the gaps identified in the existing literature.
