Truncated Grassmannians: polytopes, representations, and Cauchy formulas

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to develop algebraic and combinatorial techniques for studying the geometric properties of truncated Grassmannians, a class of algebraic varieties obtained via certain projections of classical Grassmannians within their Plücker embeddings. We introduce a class of cyclic representations of maximal parabolic subalgebras of the general linear Lie algebra, which are proved to serve as duals of the homogeneous components of coordinate rings of truncated Grassmannians. We prove that the characters of these representations are computed via truncated Cauchy formulas and establish a connection with coordinate rings of complete collineations. We also construct monomial bases of these representations in terms of certain generalized chain polytopes and use the RSK correspondence to establish connections with Cauchy-type formulas and with Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns.
