Three-Dimensional FDTD Simulation of Superconducting Terahertz Emitters Using an Effective Medium Approximation

Abstract

Compact and tunable terahertz (THz) sources with controllable polarization are sought for high-speed links, spectroscopy, and imaging. In superconducting THz emitters based on a cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, which have the potential to satisfy such properties, modeling often relies on heavy nonlinear solvers or empirical isotropic dielectrics, obscuring anisotropy, plasma response, and bias dependence. We derive an anisotropic, dispersive effective permittivity from the Lawrence-Doniach model for a layered superconductor and implement it as a user-defined material in a commercial Finite-difference Time-domain (FDTD) solver. Simulations of two device geometries reproduce linearly polarized emission from a rectangular mesa and low-axial-ratio (near-circular) emission from a truncated square mesa. This CAD-ready workflow links superconducting theory to device design, enabling rapid searches and parameter optimization for next-generation THz sources.
