Circularly Polarized Red-NIR Emission With High Dissymmetry Factor From Achiral [Mo6I8(OCOC2F5)6]2− Cluster Anion Embedded in a Bent-Core Liquid Crystal Host
Abstract
Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) is extensively used in advanced photonics, optoelectronic technologies, and biomedicine. Considerable efforts have been made to maximize the dissymmetry factor (glum) and the brightness of CPL-emitting materials, particularly in the UV–vis range, but only very few materials emit efficient CPL in the red-NIR window. In this work, we present a simple method to generate a hybrid organic-inorganic material that delivers CPL in the red-NIR, with large glum and a Figure of Merit of 0.19 and 7.07 10−2, respectively. These hybrids are obtained by mixing a red-NIR phosphorescent achiral octahedral molybdenum cluster compound with a chiral bent-core liquid crystal that can self-assemble into helical nanofilaments upon cooling from 108°C. Photophysical studies show that the emission of the inorganic nanoemitter is not affected by the organic matrix while studies on the liquid crystal properties demonstrate that the self-organization of the host is only altered at cluster concentration higher than 5 wt.% which in turn leads to a decrease of the glum value.
