Abstract

This study reveals a surprising finding that a chiral cationic pyrrolidine-substituted naphthalene diimide (cNDI-Py + ), which shows no circular dichroism (CD) or circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in its monomeric form, exhibits strong CD and broad, intense CPL when electrostatically bound to a 2D synthetic laponite nanoclay nanoplatelet (cNDI-Py + _Laponite) in an aqueous environment. This supramolecular alignment of the electrostatically anchored dye on laponite platelets leads to a chiral assembly that produces distinctive chiral excimer emission, stemming from an excited-state slip-stacked arrangement of preorganized dye molecules. The new hybrid emission band at 480 nm comes from the excited cNDI-Py+_Laponite assembly, as evidenced by a high quantum yield (Φ) of 0.40, luminescence dissymmetry (g lum ) of -0.013, and an outstanding CPL brightness of 88 M -1 cm -1 . We demonstrate that chiral dye-nanoclay assemblies serve as an underused platform for excimer-based CPL by nanoscale confinement of dye molecules. Bright circularly polarized emissions can play an important role in establishing experimental space-to-ground telecommunication links, enabling full-color 3D holographic displays, and supporting other applications that rely on chiral control of light-matter interactions. This approach provides oxygen-tolerant control with inorganic templates, enabling enantioselective excimer emission and opening new paths for CPL-active materials.
