4D Spatio-temporal Capture of Leaf Morphogenesis Reveals Synchronisation between Growth and Motion
Abstract
Growing plants, to adapt to the formation of new tissues, make movements too slow to be observed with the naked eye. However, 3D motions of thin growing structures, like leaves, are difficult to track with high precision , little is thus known of the correlation between growth and motion during leaf morphogenesis. To overcome this limitation, we built an experimental process allowing us to acquire and quantify the geometry of a growing and moving Persea americana (avocado tree) leaf at high spatial and temporal resolution across multiple days. We observed long term logistic behaviour of the growth, and the progressive dampening of the fluttering of the leaf toward a flat state. Moreover, we demonstrated that the change of regime of the leaf growth rate follows a circadian pattern that progressively smooths itself over. Finally, we showed the synchronisation of this change of growth rate regime with motions while the growth is still exponential.
