Enantiopure Telluronium Complexes through Bidentate Chalcogen Bonding: From Solid and in Solution Studies to Chiral Recognition

Abstract

This work demonstrates that tetravalent telluronium salts constitute versatile chalcogen bonding (ChB) receptors for polydentate phosphine oxide ligands. A range of bidentate phosphine oxides form highly stable 1:1 complexes with telluronium salt 1BArF in solution. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy revealed that bidentate coordination occurs through simultaneous interaction of the two phosphine oxide groups with the telluronium centre, while variable-temperature experiments evidenced a dynamic ligand-exchange process involving the third accessible σ-hole. The formation of the enantiopure telluronium complex with (S)-BINAPO was further confirmed by ECD spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, which highlighted the bidendate coordination mode while preserving one available σ-hole capable of binding an external Lewis base. Exploiting this remaining ChB donor site, host-guest complexes were formed with DMSO and a series of racemic chiral substrates. The resulting diastereomeric adducts produced clear NMR signal splitting, demonstrating the ability of these chiral telluronium complexes to discriminate between enantiomers through ChB.
