Mechanism of the hydrazine hydrate electrooxidation reaction on Ni electrodes in alkaline media as revealed by isotopic (H/D) substitution, DFT, and kinetic modelling

Abstract

OHad is an intermediate of the initial step of hydrazine oxidation on Ni • Co-adsorbed OHad lowers the activation barrier for N-H bond cleavage • The inability of Ni to catalyse the reaction in the absence of OHad accounts for the high 'onset' potential • Had is not an HHOR intermediate but its desorption kinetically limits the reaction Abstract The hydrazine hydrate oxidation reaction (HHOR) has attracted increasing attention owing to hydrazine's promise as a fuel, particularly for direct hydrazine hydrate fuel cells (DHHFCs); nevertheless, most studies have focused on noble metal catalysts, while the underlying reaction mechanism on Ni-based catalysts remains to be fully elucidated. In this work, the HHOR mechanism on Ni surfaces was studied by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations, online differential electrochemical mass-spectrometry (DEMS), electrochemical measurements with isotopic
