Dual influence of aluminum doping on the dielectric and conductive mechanisms of BaTiO3

Abstract

While BaTiO 3 ceramics are mainly used in high-performance capacitors, their potential for conductive applications remains underexplored because of their highly insulating nature. In this work, Al-doped BaTiO 3 ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction following the equation (1-x) BaTiO 3 -xBaAlO 2.5 (x = 0-0.05). This study unveils a unique transition in the electrical transport mechanisms of this system, investigated through detailed electrical impedance spectroscopy analysis. Impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed an increase in activation energy with increasing Al content, peaking at 1.28 eV for x = 0.04, indicating a more resistive behavior than pure BT (0.98eV). Remarkably, beyond this proportion, at x = 0.05, the ceramic showed a more conductive behavior with an Ea of 0.74 eV. This behavior highlights the potential of this composition for applications requiring enhanced electrical conductivity and highlights the dual role of acceptor dopants in perovskite ceramics.
