Order, Structure and Reality: A Unified Hierarchical Framework

Abstract

Despite the ubiquity of hierarchical structures across physics, mathematics, and information science, no unified mathematical language currently exists for describing, indexing, and visualizing them in a consistent manner. The goal of this paper is to fill this gap by introducing a unified hierarchical framework that provides such a language. The framework is built upon a five-level index structure and a corresponding algebraic construction based on tensor products (⊗), direct sums (⊕), and concatenation (⊞). I establish a canonical bijection between the flattened algebraic expression and a mixed-radix positional number system, demonstrating that numbers inherently carry structure. Two complementary navigation procedures are developed: a recursive cumulative method that reveals the hierarchy level by level, and a direct mixed-radix method that recovers the complete structural tuple in a single step. I further establish a geometric visualization scheme in which hierarchical blocks are represented as nested hypercubes, and show that the freedom in choosing the side lengths generates an infinite family of geometric realizations, ranging from perfect cubes to anisotropic hyper-rectangles and dimensionally collapsed structures. The framework is then generalized beyond cubic geometry: cells may assume arbitrary shapes, connections may form arbitrary graph structures, and each cell may itself be a complete hierarchical block, leading to recursive, self-similar networks. This generalization suggests a structural connection with classical fractal theory and indicates that self-similarity arises as an emergent property of this closed hierarchical framework. The main contribution of this work is thus a single, coherent formalism that unifies the algebraic, numeric, and geometric aspects of hierarchical complexity within one language.
