Computation and comparison of periods for free-running and coupled circadian clock models
Abstract
Analytic period computation remains a difficult task for mechanistic oscillator models of biological systems, due to their nonlinearity and high dimension. A similarly challenging problem is that of period computation for a coupled system of two similar oscillators and, furthermore, understanding its relation to the freerunning period of each oscillator. Here, we analyse and estimate the periods of two uncoupled or coupled circadian clocks, based on an analogous piecewise linear system obtained through a succession of model reductions. These estimates are written in terms of the model's parameters and enable us to prove the following intriguing observation for two circadian clocks: the coupled system period is always lower than the mean of the periods of the free-running oscillators.
