Amino-grafting functionalization of MIL-53(Al) via N₂:H₂ ECR plasma treatment

Abstract

The present study delves into the functionalization of the commercial Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) MIL-53(Al) using multi-dipolar electron cyclotron resonance (MDECR) plasma treatment under an N₂:H₂ gas mixture. The objective is to evaluate the potential of such plasma treatment to graft nitrogen-containing groups onto the organic linker of MIL-53(Al). To fulfill this objective, plasma diagnostics via optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and material characterization techniques such as FTIR and XPS are employed. OES was first used to determine the optimal N2:H2 condition that maximizes NH radical excitation, as these radicals are key reactive species that are potentially involved in the nitrogen functionalization mechanism. This optimal gas mixture condition was subsequently used during the plasma treatment of MIL-53(Al). A 1.6-fold enhancement of the N–H bonding signature was evidenced by FTIR, this increase being determined from the maximum peak intensity, thus highlighting the effectiveness of the MDECR treatment. XPS analysis of the treated material further confirmed the presence of chemically bonded nitrogen, indicating a nitrogen enrichment 4.7 times higher than that of the untreated material. These results conclusively demonstrate the successful functionalization of MIL-53(Al) through MDECR plasma treatment, opening new routes for post-functionalization processes of Metal-Organic Frameworks. This preliminary study will serve as a basis for future investigations into the potential of these materials as components for gas storage or filtration.
