Naphthalene-Fused Meta-Dual-Boron Compounds Enable an 80 nm Redshift with Concurrently Narrowed Full Widths at Half Maximum

Abstract

Multiple resonance emitters are highly sought after for their intrinsically narrowband emission, yet achieving long-wavelength emission without spectral broadening remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report a naphthalene fused rigid π-extension strategy based on the meta-positioned dual boron framework BBCz-DB by replacing its peripheral carbazole units with naphthalene fragments to develop the yellow MR emitter DB-CzNa. This molecular design leverages the dual aromaticity of naphthalene: while the global π-delocalization effectively narrows the energy gap, the preserved local aromaticity maintains a highly rigid molecular framework, which significantly suppresses excited-state vibronic coupling. This synergistic effect allows the MR emitters to achieve a pronounced emission redshift without sacrificing their narrow emission characteristics. Consequently, DB-CzNa achieves an 80 nm redshift relative to BBCz-DB, delivering yellow emission at 546 nm with an ultra-narrow full width at half maximum of 16 nm (0.07 eV) in toluene. A sensitized fluorescence organic light emitting diode device based on DB-CzNa affords a yellow electroluminescence at 556 nm with a FWHM of 24 nm and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 26.9%. This work demonstrates that judicious naphthalene fusion on meta-dual boron frameworks provides a powerful strategy to overcome the trade-off between spectral redshift and broadening.
