Abstract
Synthesis of hydroxyapatite (Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂, HAp) containing titanium (Ti) in the tetravalent state in its channel was successfully demonstrated by employing a post-treatment involving impregnation with a metal alkoxide followed by heat treatment, together with Rietveld refinement. Infrared spectroscopic analyses suggested that the excess positive charge arising from the cation incorporation was compensated for by proton dissociation from hydroxide ions located in the channel, resulting in the formation of titanium oxo groups in the channel. The incorporation of Ti ions into the interstitial site located in the channel resulted in light absorption characteristics distinct from those typically observed for isomorphous substitution, suggesting broadening of the potential properties of HAp-based materials owing to the expansion of their compositional and structural diversity.
