Only the immortal can (almost) flock while turning: Two-dimensional chiral immortal flocks, time crystals and non-universal sub-logarithmic roughness

Abstract

We study two-dimensional chiral ``dry'' (non-momentum conserving) ``immortal'' (number conserving) ``flocks'' (polar ordered active fluids). Noise driven fluctuations about the noise-free ``time crystal'' state, in which the velocity rotates uniformly in time, obey coupled Kardar-Parisi-Zhang-like equations for the local velocity orientation and a conserved concentration field; the latter field stabilizes order. Orientational fluctuations grow only sub-logarithmically, and number fluctuations are suppressed (``hyperuniform''); both exhibit nonuniversal scaling exponents. There are three different universality classes of disordering transitions.
