Multi-criteria assessments (MCA) of crop-livestock systems interacting through the grazing of flocks of sheep

Abstract

Sheep-grazing cover crops in arable farming systems is a relevant pathway towards agroecological transition, but its impacts remain complex to assess. Multi-criteria assessments (MCA) were carried out within three R&D projects to characterize economic, environmental and, to a lesser extent, social performances of crop-livestock systems interacting through grazing. This article provides methodological insights from the coupling of several MCA tools. The results show that integrating grazing generally improves environmental performances and, in many cases, economic outcomes, especially when system adaptations remain limited. Beyond quantitative results, this article highlights the contributions and limitations of the MCA approaches and the methodology implemented and identifies several areas for improvement.
