Comparative Dark Field X-ray Microscopy of deformation in cold-rolled AA2024-T8 containing second-phase precipitates
Abstract
Precipitation-hardened AA2024 was investigated to assess the effect of cold rolling on its microstructure in the T8 state (peak hardened with equilibrium volume fraction of S-phase). Two deformation states, 25% and 50% thickness reduction by cold rolling (CR25 and CR50), were non-destructively characterized in 3D using Dark-Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM), providing studies of crystallographic orientation fields and local lattice distortions. Mosaicity and kernel average misorientation (KAM) maps reveal an increase in the orientation spread and KAM values with increasing deformation. Cell size analysis reveals a shift toward smaller spacings in CR50 compared to CR25. The measured cell sizes are larger than those reported for the same material studied with ESBD at comparable strains; however, the results remain consistent. These results provide a quantitative description of deformation-induced microstructural evolution in AA2024-T8 and establish well-defined initial states for future DFXM studies on recovery.
