Collinear and Coplanar Altermagnetism in a Penrose Quasicrystal

Abstract

We generalize the previous group-theory based classification of collinear magnetism in the quasicrystal (QC) to general magnetic states. Taking the Penrose lattice as an example, we find that the magnetic states corresponding to 2D irreducible representations (IRRPs) of the D5 point group represent for a new type of altermagnetism (AM). Unlike conventional AM wherein zero magnetism is protected by, e.g. rotation or mirror reflection, which globally flips the spin in the magnetic pattern, the zero magnetism in these 2D-IRRP states is instead protected by a special group-representation-orthogonality theorem which states that basis functions belonging to different IRRPs are mutually orthogonal. This special compensation mechanism and the absence of 𝒫𝒯 symmetry finally lead to AM states. Taking the Penrose-Hubbard model as an example, our linear-response theory and Ginzburg-Landau theory based analysis show that the largest portion of the parameter space is occupied by such 2D-IRRP states, which can be either collinear or coplanar AM states. These special AM states are characterized by spin split in the spin-resolved angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and the spin conductance with unique symmetry features. These intriguing collinear and coplanar AM states result from symmetry and can also emerge in other QCs.
