Reasons for the partial or total seizure of beef at the Bondoukou slaughterhouse in northeastern Côte d'Ivoire
Abstract
Meat safety is a major public health issue, particularly in countries where zoonotic diseases remain common. This study was conducted at the municipal slaughterhouse in Bondoukou to identify the main reasons for partial and total rejection of beef, determine their prevalence and relative frequency, and identify the organs most frequently affected. The study involved the postmortem inspection of 1,449 cattle slaughtered during the study period. The techniques used included visual observation, palpation, and systematic incision of carcasses and organs from the fifth quarter. The results revealed that the main causes of partial seizures were tuberculosis (52.27%), abscesses (17.05%), distomatosis (13.64%), echinococcosis (10.23%), and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (6.82%). The observed prevalence rates were 3.17%, 1.04%, 0.83%, 0.62%, and 0.41%, respectively. Only one total seizure was recorded, related to generalized miliary tuberculosis, representing a rate of 0.069%. The organs most frequently seized were the lungs (54.55%), followed by the liver (39.77%) and the kidneys (5.68%). This study highlights the predominance of bovine tuberculosis as the main cause of meat rejection at the Bondoukou slaughterhouse, thereby underscoring the importance of strengthening veterinary surveillance, implementing zoonosis prevention measures, and improving livestock farming practices. These actions would help reduce economic losses and ensure better sanitary quality of meat intended for human consumption. Keywords : Seizure, zoonoses, cattle, slaughterhouse, Bondoukou-Ivory Coast
