Oxidation of ferrous iron in aerobic and anoxic conditions in activated sludge systems
Abstract
Fe 2+ oxidation kinetics were quantified under aerobic and anoxic conditions. • Anoxic Fe 2+ oxidation rate was measured for the first time in activated sludge. • Sludge concentration affects Fe 2+ disappearance from liquid phase. • Adsorption controls short term Fe partitioning, not long term plantwide fate. • Measured kinetics improved generic CSTR and full-scale plant effluent Fe predictions.
