Lifting Safety Through Reduced-Order Model Architectures: An Invariant Manifold Approach

Abstract

Reduced-order model architectures are often used to decompose complex safety-critical control design tasks into tractable subproblems. In this paradigm, one must ask: when does the safety of a reduced-order model lift to safety of the full system? Taking an invariant manifold perspective, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of smooth, regular lifts of compact safe sets from reduced-order models. Our characterization relies only on asymptotic stability of an embedding of a reduced-order safe set, without additional robustness or rate conditions. We apply these results to study control barrier functions in reduced-order model architectures and lifts of safe sets through cascades. Further, we use our conditions to obtain topological obstructions to the tracking of safe, kinematic reduced-order models for mechanical systems. We conclude by using these obstructions to inform safe hierarchical control design for an underactuated satellite on SE(3).
