Redox-active alloxazine-based pillared coordination polymers featuring azo/alkene dicarboxylate linkers

Abstract

A one-pot solvothermal strategy has been used for the synthesis of two new series of isostructural coordination polymers based on the use of M = Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ or Zn2+ ions, dipyridyl alloxazine appended ligands L, and trans-stilbene-4,4′-dicarboxylate (stdc2−) or trans-azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylate (azbdc2−) linkers. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (M = Zn2+) revealed that the resulting compounds, formulated as [M2(stdc)2L] (1-M) or [M2(azbdc)2L] (2-M) (M = Co, Ni, Cu or Zn), comprise two-dimensional metal–carboxylate layers pillared by an alloxazine-derived bis(pyridyl) ligand, giving rise to interpenetrated three-dimensional frameworks with accessible channels of ca. 8 × 11 Å2. The compounds present a high thermal stability (>320 °C) and a very low SA, when exposed to gas adsorption. Electrochemical studies on 1-Zn and 2-Zn demonstrate reversible ligand-centred redox activity, and for 2-Zn the additional reduction of the azo-derivative ligand could be observed. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the first pillared Coordination compound incorporating two redox-active ligands.
