Women with severe postpartum hemorrhage have a decreased endogenous thrombin potential before delivery

Abstract

Essentials Severe postpartum hemorrhage is associated with maternal morbidity and mortality.

 We characterized coagulability of predelivery plasmas from pregnant women in a case-control study.

 Predelivery endogenous thrombin potential levels measured with the thrombin generation assay were reduced in women with severe postpartum hemorrhage.

 Further studies are needed to confirm these data and investigate potential underlying mechanisms.
