Current status of pharmacological interventions for preventing stenosis of arteriovenous hemodialysis access

Abstract

Autogenous arteriovenous fistulas and arteriovenous grafts are currently the most commonly used types of hemodialysis vascular access. Vascular stenosis and secondary thrombosis are the major causes of vascular access dysfunction. At present, the management of vascular access dysfunction relies primarily on surgical interventions, including open surgery and endovascular treatment, whereas pharmacological strategies for prevention have not yet been incorporated into routine clinical practice. This review summarizes recent advances in pharmacological interventions for maintaining vascular access patency and preventing vascular stenosis, with the aim of exploring the potential role and clinical value of pharmacological strategies in preserving vascular access patency.
