3D-Printed Sustainable PLA/Flax Sandwich Panels Featuring Antitrichiral Cores: Effects of Geometry Parameters, and Density on Mechanical Performance
Abstract
This work investigates the quasi-static mechanical response and energy-absorption capability of 3D-printed sandwich panels featuring anti-trichiral PLA/flax cores. The architected metamaterial cores are fabricated by fused deposition modeling using a bio-based composite filament, and their geometry is systematically varied through node radius, ligament length, and number of unit cells across the width. A detailed CAD design is used to generate antitrichiral lattices with different core densities, which are then printed under controlled processing conditions. Compression and indentation tests are performed to characterize global stiffness, plateau stress, load displacement behavior, and dissipated energy, thereby assessing the influence of geometric parameters on structural performance. Results show that increasing node radius and core thickness, or decreasing ligament length, enhances stiffness and significantly improves energy absorption in both compression and indentation, with denser configurations exhibiting stable, progressive collapse suitable for protective applications. The combination of auxetic antitrichiral topology and sustainable PLA/flax composite enables lightweight, tunable, and environmentally friendly core designs. The findings provide quantitative guidelines for tailoring geometry performance relationships in anti-trichiral cores and highlight their potential for impact-mitigation and indentation-resistant sandwich structures in applications where both mechanical efficiency and sustainability are required. .
