Abstract

Background: Graft versus Host Disease is a consequence of allogeneic bone marrowtransplantation in which the new transplanted cells attack the child target organs as skin, liver and intestine. Nursing staff has an important role in assessing, scaling and managingit. Aim of the study: was to evaluate the effect of educational intervention on nurses'performance for children suffering from Graft versus Host Disease following allogeneicBone Marrow Transplantation. Research design: Aquasi-experimental research designwas utilized. Subjects: A convenience sampling of 30 nurses who provide direct care tochildren suffering from Graft versus Host Disease. Setting: Bone Marrow TransplantationUnit of Tanta International Educational Hospital. Tools: Two tools were used to collectdata: Tool (I): Structure Interview Schedule to assess nurses’ knowledge about Graftversus Host Disease. Tool (II): Observational Checklists to evaluate nurses’ practiceregarding care of Graft versus Host Disease children. Results: The present studyrepresented that, majority of nurses had low level of knowledge and unsatisfactorypractices regarding care of children suffering from Graft versus Host Disease beforeimplementation of educational intervention. While the total score of nurses’ knowledgeand practices were improved immediately and one month after implementation ofeducational intervention. Conclusion: There was a highly statistically significantimprovement in nurses' total knowledge, practice scores after implementation ofeducational intervention. Recommendations: Continuous Training program for nurses atBone Marrow Transplantation units about Graft versus Host Disease and the applicationrecent nursing practices for Graft versus Host Diseases.
