India’s DNA synthesis landscape: regulatory frameworks, industry structure, and biosecurity gaps

Abstract

India is among the world’s largest and fastest-growing bioeconomies and ranks third globally in the number of in-country custom DNA synthesis providers, yet it lacks a dedicated regulatory framework governing the synthesis, sale, and distribution of synthetic nucleic acids. This perspective article examines India’s policy and regulatory landscape for synthetic DNA alongside a comprehensive mapping of the domestic DNA synthesis industry.
