Abstract

The incorporation of flexible coordinating polymers into crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remains challenging because the conformational freedom of macromolecular ligands can interfere with the development of long-range order. Here, we report IEF-35(Cu), a new Cu–ellagate MOF whose crystal structure was resolved by electron diffraction, and its extension to a polymer-containing framework, PolyIEF-35(Cu), through the incorporation of poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) as a co-ligand. The resulting hybrid retained the characteristic features of the parent framework while displaying pronounced changes in particle morphology and gas sorption. Variation of the ellagic acid (EA) to PIA ratio showed that the crystalline hybrid could be obtained over a relatively broad compositional range. Both materials retained their crystallinity upon heating up to 250 °C and exhibited substantial stability toward the investigated solvents. Finally, biological studies showed cytocompatibility under the investigated conditions and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis .
