Abstract
This study established a new hybrid biofilm reactor, the anaerobic baffled biofilm reactor (ABBR), by integrating an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) with columnar carriers of non-woven fabric wrapped around honeycomb-shaped packing. Its anammox performance and intrinsic mechanisms were systematically investigated. Compared with the conventional ABR, the ABBR shortened the start-up period by 28.57%. In stage 3, at HRTs of 5 h (ABR) and 3 h (ABBR), with influent NH₄⁺-N and NO₂⁻-N of approximately 50 mg/L each and an effective volume of 6 L, the nitrogen removal rate increased from 0.36 to 0.70 kg N/(m³·d). The ABBR exhibited stronger internal turbulence. Enhanced turbulence around the biofilm increased the contact area between AnAOB and substrates, promoting biofilm growth. AnAOB attached to the packing may have exposed more hydrophobic functional groups, potentially forming a denser and more stable biofilm. The ABBR also showed higher biodiversity, with AnAOB enrichment and potential taxonomic associations within AnAOB-dominated consortia. It achieved efficient and stable nitrogen removal. This strategy is promising for rapid start-up and stable operation of anammox, particularly for low-strength wastewater treatment.
