Carbonylative Cross Couplings Promoted by a Metal Carbonyl Complex in Catalytic Amounts
Abstract
Carbon monoxide is a highly valuable building block that enables the rapid construction of complex molecules like pharmaceuticals from simple and commercial precursors. However, the handling of CO requires special and elaborate precautions, since it is a highly toxic and odourless gas supplied in pressurized gas cylinders. To improve operations with carbon monoxide several CO surrogates including Mo(CO) 6 have been introduced, which form CO in enclosed gas reactors on demand. Herein, we report on the discovery of Fe 2 (CO) 9 as a highly efficient CO surrogate, which unlike preceding works is capable to transfer 8 out of 9 CO ligands onto the molecule of interest. This enables the application diiron nonacarbonyl in “catalytic amount” of 15 mol% with regard to the aryl halide coupling partner (100 mol%). The high synthetic value of the novel approach is witnessed by three different carbonylative cross couplings, syntheses of four pharmaceuticals and a head-to-head comparison with Mo(CO) 6 as gold standard.
