Frontier Poetics of Tang Dynasty: Construction of National Identity and Traditional Patriotism Culture in Gaoshi and Cen Shen’s Poems

Abstract

Tang frontier poetry constitutes a core carrier of medieval Chinese national identity expression and traditional patriotism inheritance. As the representative poets of prosperous Tang frontier literature, Gao Shi and Cen Shen formed differentiated poetic narratives of frontier landscapes, military spirits, and national boundaries under the unified historical context of Tang territorial expansion and border defense. Most existing studies remain confined to qualitative textual analysis and thematic interpretation, lacking quantitative empirical verification and dimensionalized theoretical modeling of the correlation between frontier poetics, national identity, and patriotism culture. This study constructs a Frontier Patriotism Identity Index (FPII) and a multi-dimensional poetic discourse evaluation system, adopts quantitative textual analysis, statistical regression modeling, and comparative corpus experimental methods, and conducts a systematic empirical study on 287 valid frontier poems by Gao Shi and Cen Shen. The experimental results verify that the dual poetic paradigms of rational loyalty narration (Gao Shi) and epic frontier sublime narration (Cen Shen) jointly construct the multi-layered national identity system of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, including territorial identity, national cultural identity, and collective military identity. Statistical analysis demonstrates that the patriotism cultural output intensity of Cen Shen’s landscape epic poetry is 18.7% higher than that of Gao Shi’s realistic documentary poetry, while Gao Shi’s works show 23.2% higher accuracy in expressing institutional and political national identity. This study innovatively realizes the quantitative modeling of traditional literary patriotism connotation, constructs a measurable evaluation framework for Tang frontier poetic identity construction, and provides a new empirical paradigm for the modern interpretation and cultural inheritance of ancient Chinese patriotic literature.
