From Willingness to Adoption: Information, Perception, and the Diffusion of Fungus-Resistant Grapevine Varieties in Southern France

Abstract

Fungus-resistant grapevine (FRG) varieties reduce fungicide use, but remain weakly diffused worldwide, echoing debates on slow agricultural innovation diffusion. Using a survey of winegrowers in Southern France, we segmented respondents into Refractory, Willing, and Adopter groups, combining Multiple Factor Analysis and Factor Analysis of Mixed Data with a nested multinomial logistic regression to identify farm-structural and informational determinants of adoption. Grower age and organic-versus-conventional status mattered little, and informational profile separated favorable from unfavorable dispositions. Overall, adoption depended on confidence in information and farm size. Policy should prioritize information credibility and financial support for small growers adopting FRG varieties.
